Story

Niantic grew backup and failover faster than the local tools around it. From the United States, communication services teams still had to serve customers and internal partners who expected a straight answer. SRE and operations were the ones stitching the picture together by hand.

Rolling out IBM watsonx put reliability engineering on IBM. IBM offers hybrid cloud, AI, and automation software, including watsonx, Red Hat OpenShift, and observability products for large enterprises. Niantic keeps the product in the path where work already happens, so SRE and operations do not context-switch into a graveyard system used only for audits.

The visible result is steadier reliability engineering. Backup and failover is easier to inspect, and adjacent groups can join SRE and operations without a guided tour of someone's desktop.
