Story
Inside Garmin, reliability engineering used to depend on whoever still had the latest file. That pattern is common in consumer discretionary groups working out of the United States. SRE and operations needed a system that would still make sense after the original project team moved on.
Garmin uses Tanzu from VMware as the working layer for backup and failover. VMware, part of Broadcom, provides virtualization, private cloud, and container software used to run enterprise data centers. The practical change is simple: reliability engineering has a home, and reviews happen there instead of in a forwarded thread.
Nothing in this writeup invents a savings number. What Garmin gets from VMware is a durable place to run reliability engineering and a way for SRE and operations to see the same backup and failover at the same time.
