Oracle Cloud Migration Streamlines Enterprise Operations for Global Construction Leader
Skanska Sweden, a global construction services provider, reduced operational complexity and IT overhead by migrating its on-premises Oracle Fusion applications to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
Value Results Summary
Skanska, a $17 billion global construction company founded in Sweden in 1887, has built iconic projects including New York's LaGuardia Airport and London's M5 Motorway. After running Oracle E-Business Suite on-premises for two decades, Skanska Sweden recognized that managing applications in proprietary data centers was no longer sustainable. The company faced significant operational strain from large, infrequent upgrade cycles and relied on extensive customizations specific to Swedish operations. By 2021, Skanska Sweden decided to migrate its ERP, Procurement, SCM, and HCM systems to Oracle Cloud Applications to enable continuous updates, reduce technical dependencies, and adopt a provider-managed model.
Working with Oracle Consulting, Skanska Sweden completed the migration on time and under budget. The implementation team built over 190 integrations to connect the cloud-based Oracle applications with specialized third-party systems, including project management platforms that leverage Oracle Cloud ERP as the central transaction center for revenue and expenditures. Critically, the company significantly reduced its application extensions from numerous customizations to 66 targeted extensions, with plans for further reductions to minimize maintenance overhead. Skanska also deployed Oracle Analytics Cloud to generate advanced finance and HR reporting for executive leadership, enabling data-driven insights for operational decisions, including sustainability initiatives aligned with its net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2045. Additionally, Oracle Identity and Access Management and OCI API Gateway were implemented on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to secure system access and monitor user permissions across the enterprise.
Skanska Sweden now operates with substantially reduced costs and operational complexity, freeing its IT team from managing software upgrades and data center infrastructure. Rather than undertaking large, disruptive periodic upgrades, the company can now adopt new Oracle Cloud features and functionalities on a quarterly basis, providing IT staff with greater flexibility and reducing disruption to business operations. As noted by IT Chief Operating Officer Mikael Stohm, "With Oracle Cloud, we have more control over upgradesβwe will never see those huge upgrade projects like we did before. We can also more easily adopt new functionalities one by one, rather than having to take everything in at once." Skanska Sweden is now positioned to integrate additional finance and back-office applications with core construction industry processes, building on a foundation that enables continuous innovation.
