Snowflake Powers Hyperlocal Market Optimization for Global Food Delivery Platform
Wolt, a leading food and goods delivery platform operating in 27 countries, accelerated expansion decisions and improved customer selection by implementing Snowflake's native geospatial analytics capabilities.
Value Results Summary
Wolt operates a three-sided marketplace connecting shoppers, merchants, and couriers across 27 countries and more than 500 cities. The Helsinki-based company faced a critical challenge: determining optimal market density and merchant coverage at scale while maintaining the hyperlocal selection that defines customer experience. With arbitrary market definitions and limited geospatial visibility, Wolt lacked the infrastructure to make data-driven expansion decisions across diverse geographies. Analytics Lead Sharat Ramamani explained, "The real challenge comes down to building infrastructure that supports all these countries at scale while also operating at the level of detail to hyperlocally solve for great selection."
Wolt turned to Snowflake's Data Cloud to build a scalable geospatial analytics solution leveraging native support for H3 hexagonal hierarchical geospatial indexing. The solution uses Snowflake's SQL functions for H3 to efficiently assign population data to specific markets across Wolt's global footprint. By standardizing coverage areas into hexagons of uniform size and joining proprietary venue data with global population datasets containing over 2 million rows, Wolt created a flexible interface enabling market managers, expansion teams, and sales leaders to visualize coverage gaps and population density at granular levelsโdown to 200-meter areas. This approach provided precise, repeatable market analysis replacing previous ad hoc efforts.
The geospatial analytics platform delivered measurable business outcomes. Market managers now identify merchant density and coverage gaps in minutes rather than weeks, enabling faster city launches and optimized resource allocation. International expansion teams used the solution to inform entry into new markets, such as Austria, by identifying population density hubs. Sales leaders allocate resources strategically to underserved regions, directly improving consumer selection in their immediate vicinity. Ramamani concluded, "Geospatial analytics through Snowflake help us be a lot smarter about how we expand. We're building density first to drive good customer experiences and then scaling outwards from there."
