Databricks Powers Real-Time Video Analytics and Player Insights for Global Football League
LaLiga, the world's premier professional football league, modernized player analysis and fan engagement by deploying Databricks to process petabytes of stadium video data in real time.
Value Results Summary
LaLiga, one of the world's most-watched professional football leagues, generates massive amounts of digital data through hundreds of high-performance HD cameras embedded throughout stadiums. Each match produces 300,000 frames of video data capturing player and ball movement, generating petabytes of information daily. While this raw material represented unprecedented opportunity for competitive advantage and fan engagement, LaLiga's previous infrastructure lacked the capability to efficiently ingest such volumes of live-action data or extract insights that business stakeholders could understand and act upon. The organization struggled to build a data-first culture where analytics would inform team operations, player development, and revenue generation.
LaLiga deployed the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform on Microsoft Azure to address these challenges at scale. Delta Lake provided a unified data layer that prepared all datasets for analytics and real-time machine learning without performance degradation. The platform integrated MLflow for building and deploying predictive models that track player and ball movement in real time, enabling coaches and analysts to evaluate player performance, speed, and health for immediate in-game decisions. Power BI dashboards delivered these insights directly to business stakeholders, while the platform simultaneously enabled LaLiga to analyze fan behavior patterns and deliver personalized content experiences that drive engagement and e-commerce revenue.
With Databricks serving as the operational foundation for data-driven decision-making, LaLiga established LALIGA Tech as a new business entity to expand these capabilities globally. The company now offers sports and entertainment organizations worldwide access to the same data and AI technologies that transformed its own operations—at a fraction of the cost and complexity such implementations traditionally require. As Guillermo Roldán, Head of Architecture at LALIGA Tech, explained: "Databricks has made what was previously impossible extremely easy. With LALIGA Tech, we can now put the power of data and AI into the hands of all sporting and entertainment organizations."
